Learning center open house

Trinity Learning Center of Smithsburg will have an open house from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28. Bring your children for a magic show and crafts and check out the facility and programs. Youth conference

High school students and their youth leaders are invited to experience a high definition weekend complete with national speakers, musicians and entertainers at the IMPACT 2009: HD (High Definition) Youth Conference, Friday, March 27 through Sunday, March 29, at the Ocean City (Md.) Convention Center.

The weekend will feature live music by Skillet and Daniel's Window. Speakers for the weekend are Steve Fitzhugh and Tyra Lokey. Curt Cloninger will present drama and comedy. Adult training will be available with Chap Clark and Lauren Winner.

Spelling bee

FREDERICK, Md. -Frederick County's second annual spelling bee is 2 p.m. Sunday, April 26, at The Weinberg Center for the Arts.

The elimination bees will be at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, March 14, and 7 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at C. Burr Artz Public Library; 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at Urbana Regional Library; and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 29, at Thurmont Regional Library.

Registration for the elimination bees ends Wednesday, March 11. Spellers must be between the ages of 9 and 14 and be in fourth through eighth grade at any public, private or home school. Specific eligibility requirements are available at all Frederick County Public Library branches and at

The prize will be a $1,000 U.S. Series EE Savings Bond for the top spelling and a $500 U.S. Series EE Savings Bond for the runner-up.

Scholarship applications

The Washington County Retired Educational Personnel Association has made available scholarship applications for the 2009-10 academic year. Candidates must be junior or senior graduates from a Washington County public high school or one who has already graduated. Six $1,200 scholarships will be awarded.
