County roads project bids under budget

Bids for engineering and design of two major county road projects each came in more than $100,000 under budget, public works director Joseph Kroboth said.

URS Corp., a global engineering company in San Francisco, was the low bidder for engineering and design for the widening of Eastern Boulevard between Jefferson Boulevard and Security Road, Kroboth said. URS bid about $230,000 for the job, Kroboth said.

Development Facilities Inc., an engineering firm in Millersville, Md., was the low bidder for engineering and design of the first phase of Southern Boulevard, which will form part of a bypass around Funkstown. The company bid about $190,000 for the job.

Kroboth attributed the low bids to a lack of available engineering work in the current economy.

Part of Back Road near Dargan might need to be closed

DARGAN - A half-mile stretch of Back Road near Dargan might need to be closed because it is collapsing into the C&O Canal, Washington County public works director Joseph Kroboth said.

Half of one lane has sunken at least a foot and is shifting toward the canal, he said.

If the road is closed, vehicles will be detoured six to eight miles on Harpers Ferry Road, Kroboth said. A boat ramp along Back Road would remain accessible, he said.

That portion of Back Road is used by 200 to 300 vehicles a day, Kroboth said.
