CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- James R. "Pete" Berry Sr., 80, of 832 Lincoln Way West, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, in ManorCare Health Services of Chambersburg. 

Born Nov. 15, 1928, in Leesburg, Va., he was a son of the late John E. Berry Sr. and Charlotte Randall Berry.

He was retired from West Virginia Highway Department and for most of his life he was a self-employed race horse trainer in Charles Town, W.Va. 


He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife of more than 52 years, Helen J. Purvis Berry; 11 children, Ann Camp, Regina Berry and Charlotte Presley, all of Maryland, Toni Berry and Quita Berry, both of West Virginia, Jeffrey Berry of Summit Point, W.Va., Deborah Caution of Maryland, Dawna Campbell, Curtis Berry and Russell Berry, all of Chambersburg, and Dorothy Ruiz of Tuscon, Ariz.; four sisters, Edna Evans and Alise Cook, both of Middleburg, Va., Robbie Lett of Philadelphia, and Evelyn Brooks of Upperville, Va.; numerous grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by one son, James Jr.; two brothers and three sisters.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg. Jeffrey Berry will officiate. Burial will follow in Lebanon Cemetery, Chambersburg.  

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday and from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Monday. A separate memorial service will also be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 28 at Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 384 Floral Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201.
