Courthouse alley again open to traffic

February 26, 2009

HAGERSTOWN -- The alley between the Washington County Courthouse and Hagerstown Trust Bank, which has been closed for the better part of five years due to courthouse construction, has reopened to traffic, county officials said Thursday.

The alley was closed in 2004 to accommodate a trailer and Dumpster during renovations to the courthouse annex and remained closed intermittently through 2006, according to Robert J. Slocum, the county's deputy director of public works. The alley was closed again in the spring of 2006, Slocum said. Most recently, the closure was due to construction of a sally port at the courthouse.

The sally port is not yet in use, county spokesman Norman Bassett said. In the meantime, the alley will be inaccessible when law enforcement officials need to park there to transport inmates in and out of the courthouse, Bassett said. Even before the alley closed, it was inaccessible while in use for that purpose, he said.

Slocum said the sally port should soon be ready to use. County officials are waiting on a final use and occupancy permit, he said.
