SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Charles M. "Bud" Gant, 72, of Shepherdstown, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, at his home.

Born May 29, 1936, in Jefferson County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Evelyn Sowers Rickard.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was the recipient of the Navy Achievement Medal and Navy Commendation Medal.

He was employed at the Clarion Hotel in Shepherdstown and as Chief of Security before retiring in October 2008.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Clara Banks-Gant; one daughter, Theresa Golding of Winchester, Va.; one son, Johnnie Gant of Georgia; two stepdaughters, Susan Cook and Dawn Pingley; five stepsons, Reid Banks, Kevin Banks, Allan Banks, Todd Banks and Neill Banks; one brother, Kenneth H. Gant of Berryville, Va.; 10 grandsons, nine granddaughters and two great-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Jaime Lyn Banks.


Memorial services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home's South Berkeley Chapel in Inwood, W.Va. Pastor Harvey Bane will officiate. Military graveside services will be Monday, March 9, at 11 a.m. at Quantico National Cemetery, Quantico, Va.

The family will receive friends at the funeral chapel from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service.
