FAIRFAX, Va. -- A. Carl von Sternberg, 80, CEO of Allen Corporation of America, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at his office in Fairfax, Va.

He was born in Keene, N.Y., and was raised in Madison, Conn. He attended Yale University on an academic scholarship, graduating in 1951.

After graduation he worked for many large companies including Boeing, Kodak, U.S. Rubber, and General Dynamics, before co-founding his first company in 1969.

After 40 very successful years building and running companies, he was still very involved in the operation of his fourth company, Allen Corporation of America, at the time of his death.

Carl was a longtime resident of Alexandria, Va. He also owned farms around Mercersburg, Pa., and ranches in central South Dakota for many years. He was an avid bird hunter and lifelong fly fisherman. He enjoyed horses, stonework and cutting firewood. He had traveled extensively throughout the world for business and pleasure.

He is survived by his wife, Janet; two sons, Kurt of Omaha, Neb., Mark (and wife Lisa) of Mercersburg; two daughters, Leanna and Allena of Arlington, Va.; sister Fran Disiervi of Madison, Conn.; four grandchildren, Paul, Ashley, Riley Page, and Tristann; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 28 at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, 10987 Little Cove Road, Mercersburg, PA 17236. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his memory to the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church.
