Winners in the W. Paul Engle Jr. Open Chess Tournament

Chess players check skills with mates

BOONSBORO - Chess players from the four-state area participated in the second annual W. Paul Engle Jr. Open Chess Tournament hosted by the Boonsboro Middle School Chess Club and the Maryland Chess Association. The tournament, held on Saturday, Feb. 21 at Boonsboro Middle School, drew about 120 participants ranging from grades kindergarten to 12 and adult players.

In the Scholastic non-rated section, Christian Brown from Pleasant Valley Elementary defended his title from a year ago by winning all his rounds and placing first. Blake Dougherty of Boonsboro Elementary School placed second with a 3-1 record. Matthew Frushour, PVE, placed third, Charles Leadingham, Sharpsburg Elementary, placed fourth, tied with Eddie Nordan, BES, and Patrick Glenny, BMS, with a 2-2 record.

In the Novice section, Martin Elliott, Paramount Elementary School, placed first with a 4-0 record, followed by Bradan Smith, Greencastle-Antrim Elementary School, Pa.; Maurice Chandler, Maryland Academy for Tech/Health Science; Joshua Walbridge, St. Anne's School, Annapolis; and Jessica Soumphontphakdy, Northwest High School, placing second through fifth, respectively. Team standings -- Northwest High, Germantown, Md., placed first; second was St. Anne's School; third, Greencastle-Antrim Elementary; fourth, Pleasant Valley Elementary.

In the Reserve section, Rohan Leffers, Northwest High, won a tight tiebreaker over Charlotte Kim, Roland Park Country School; Andrew Bosco, Northwest High, and Cory Latham, Mary of Nazareth, all earning a 4-0 record. Ricky Warrick, BMS, placed fifth and won a trophy for best under 600-rated player. Evan Kerr, Pleasant Valley Elementary, won a trophy for best under 500-rated player and Gregory Fiola, BMS, won a trophy for best-unrated player in the Reserve section. Also placing well were David George, BMS, in 14th place and Dominic Smith-DiLeo, PVE, in 15th place, both going 3-1. Team standings -- first place went to Northwest High, second place to Mary of Nazareth, Germantown, Md., and third place to BMS.

In the Scholastic Open section, Aneesh Susarla, Oakhill Elementary, Herndon, Va., went undefeated with a 4-0 record and placed first. Jeffrey Chang, Cold Spring Elementary, Md., and Andrew Lim, Chris Cordero and Michael Martinez, all from Northwest HS, tied for second place with a 3-1 record. Team standings -- first place, Northwest High, second place, Oakhill Elementary.

In the Open non-rated section, David Elliott defended his title from a year ago, winning this section with a 4-0 record. Placing second was Scott Moser, third, Siva Balasubramanian and BMS teacher Brian Stottlemyer placed seventh.
