February 24, 2009

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A Chambersburg man charged with robbing a convenience store of $100 on Feb. 16 waived his preliminary hearing Tuesday in Franklin Count Central Court.

Robert Andy Scatena, 40, of 1140 Edgar Ave., is charged with robbery, theft and driving under the influence in the holdup at the Sheetz at 875 Norland Ave. His preliminary hearing has been scheduled for April, according to court records.

Scatena entered the store shortly before midnight Feb. 16 armed with a handgun, and wearing a ski mask and gloves, Chambersburg police said. He asked the cashier for $100 and left the store in a tan four-door Subaru, images of which were captured on the store's surveillance video, police said.

As an officer was leaving the store following the initial investigation, he spotted a car matching that description driving west on Norland Avenue, police said.

Scatena told police he discarded the gun, mask and jacket he wore in the robbery in a wooded area near Pond Bank, Pa., according to the affidavit of probable cause. Police said Scatena wanted the $100 to buy crack cocaine.
