February 24, 2009

INWOOD, W.Va. -- An accident involving a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle at about 1:15 p.m. Tuesday halted traffic on southbound Interstate 81, a spokesperson from Berkeley County emergency services said.

The accident took place south of exit 5 at Inwood.

The tractor-trailer rolled over, blocking the southbound lanes, the spokesperson said.

The highway remained blocked at 4:24 p.m. Traffic was backed up to exit 12.

Officers from West Virginia State Police and the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department were at the scene, those agencies said.

At least one person was flown from the accident scene by helicopter, according to a witness.

Traffic was being rerouted from I-81 at exit 5 to W.Va. 51 and then to U.S. 11, another witness said.
