Saint James student wins $2,000 scholarship

Carrie Ross of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., a student at Saint James School, received a $2,000 travel scholarship from West Virginia Lions Youth Camps and Exchange.

The second-place scholarship of $1,000 went to Sara Swanson, a senior at Bridgeport (W.Va.) High School.

The contest was open to all West Virginia youths in grades 10 to 12 interested in a four- to five-week stays overseas this summer.

Ross, a junior, plans to travel to Italy. The stay will include a youth camp and a host family stay. The purpose of the program is to provide youth the opportunity to visit a foreign country and experience a different culture.

Ross is active in theater and is a member of the Saint James Chapel Choir, which will perform at the Kennedy Center and in Williamsburg, Va., this spring.

She is a member of the varsity tennis and field hockey teams, and serves with the tour guide and Big Sister programs, yearbook committee and Mummer's Society. She hopes to attend nursing school and become a pediatric surgical nurse.

Ross will be sponsored by the Berkeley Springs Lions Club.
