BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Robert Lee Hawvermale Sr., 79, of Berkeley Springs, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at Lake Suzy, Fla.

Born June 2, 1929, in Berkeley Springs, he was the son of the late Joseph and Lee Johnson Hawvermale.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Hawvermale, in 1980.

He was a graduate of Berkeley Springs High School and received an engineering degree from West Virginia University. He also received a Realtors license from Georgetown University.

He retired from the U.S. Silica Corporation, as chief civil engineer.

He served in the U.S. Air Force, during the Korean War.

He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry.

He served as vice chairman of the Board of Directors of the Citizen's National Bank, was a member of Deford Lodge 88 AF&AM of Berkeley Springs, Warm Springs Public Services District and Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post 60 of Berkeley Springs of which he was the chairman of the World War II Memorial Committee.

He is survived by his wife, Flora "Babe" Hawvermale; one son, Robert L. Hawvermale Jr. of Martinsburg, W.Va.; three stepdaughters, Diane Willard of Tybee Island, Ga., Jackie Callahan of North Ridge, Calif. and Wynema Batson of Sangar, Texas; one stepson, Douglas Whitehorn of Pawhawska, Okla.; one granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; stepgrandchildren; and stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Hawvermale.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Frank Coe will officiate. Burial will follow in Greenway Cemetery, with graveside military honors by the Tri-State Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home in Berkeley Springs.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 180 S. Washington St., Berkeley Springs, WV 25411.
