Conway, Thurber, Shives honored

BALTIMORE -- Smithsburg senior Josh Conway and Clear Spring senior Jordan Thurber were named to the Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches preseason All-State Team in a ceremony at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on Saturday.

Conway was named to the AAU National Championship All-Tournament Team. He recently signed a National Letter of Intent with Coastal Carolina University. Thurber played for Team Maryland in the 2008 Sunbelt Classic. He has 18 career home runs and has started every varsity game since his freshman year.

Clear Spring coach Mark Shives was honored as the District 1 Coach of the Year after leading the Blazers to an 18-4 record and a Class 1A state semifinal berth in 2008.


Fulton Co. Christian teams finish third in Falcon Classic

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The boys and girls basketball teams from Fulton County Community Christian both finished third in the Falcon Classic tournament at Covenant Christian.


T.J. Leedy's two free throws with 3.7 seconds left in the second overtime gave the FCCC boys a 52-51 over Carlisle Christian in the consolation game on Saturday. Leedy made the first shot to tie the game, then missed the second before getting another opportunity because of a lane violation. Leedy capitalized, sinking the third shot to give FCCC (19-5) the win.

Leedy finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Kenny Lininger added 16 points and Seth Gordon had 13 points, six assists and five steals.

Skyler Gordon had 17 points and Leedy had 15 points and 12 boards in a 48-45 loss to Covenant Christian on Friday.

Jenae Gordon had 24 points to lead the FCCC girls (7-12) to a 45-22 win over Covenant in their consolation game Saturday. Andrea Leedy had seven assists and six steals and Samantha Reece had seven rebounds. Gordon was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
