MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Preston Bland Gooden, 69, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009.

Born Feb. 5, 1940, in Greene County, Va., he was the son of the late Oscar Gooden and Nina Morris Eaton and stepson of Miller Eaton.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Peggy Marie Orr Gooden.

He was the Berkeley County (W.Va.) Assessor and the owner of RBM Security and Satellite.

He had been sheriff of Berkeley County from 1989 through 1996.

He was a member of the West Virginia Association of Counties Legislative Committee (WVACO), treasurer of the Berkeley County Republicans, and past president of both the West Virginia and National Sheriff's Association.

He was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church and the New Beginnings Full Gospel Church, where he served as an elder.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Burkhart Gooden; three daughters, Terri Nahari of Kentucky, and Gail Kirkbride and Dawn Evans, both of Martinsburg; one son, Randall Gooden of Martinsburg; three brothers, Arnold Gooden of Thurmont, Md., Wayne Gooden of Georgia and Lawrence Gooden of Martinsburg; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Angel Marie Gooden.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Leo Catholic Church. The Rev. Brian Shoda and the Rev. Oscar Motilal will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday and Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. at South Berkeley Funeral Chapel in Inwood, W.Va.
