MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Vesta Waneta Butler Van Metre, 91, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at her home.

Born April 7, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Anna Grandstaff Butler and Oscar Philip Butler.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Issac D. Van Metre Jr.

She was a 1935 graduate of Martinsburg (W.Va.) High School.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Winchester Avenue Christian Church, serving as a deaconess. She was an honorary trustee of Mount Zion Baptist Church, which adjoins the Van Metre home.

She was a former member of the Van Clevesville Homemakers Club, a member of the Martinsburg Racquette Club, a member and past president of the Martinsburg High School Alumni Association, a member and past president of the Norborne Garden Club and executive secretary of the West Virginia Federated Garden Clubs, among others.

She is survived by nephews, Dennis M. Butts and James M. Van Metre IV; twin nieces, Ann Bergdoll Nickerson and Blanch Bergdoll Brady; nieces, Julie Tate and Dotty Van Metre; great-nieces; and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Odessa B. Butts; one niece; one nephew; and one great-niece.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Winchester Avenue Christian Church. The Rev. Curtis Wheeler will officiate. Burial will be in the Van Metre Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg and Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
