ORLANDO, Fla. -- Anna Barkdoll Gay, 99, of Berrywood Drive in Orlando, Fla., died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at her home.

Born Sept. 2, 1909, in Ringgold, Md., she was the daughter of the late Frank L. and Sophia (Miner) Barkdoll.

She was a graduate of the University of Maryland and started her teaching career in Ringgold in a one-room schoolhouse teaching first through sixth grades.

Following her marriage to James L. Gay, the couple moved to Florida in the early 1930s. After her husband's death, she attended the University of Miami, and in 1962 began teaching second grade at Dover Shores Elementary School, where she retired after more than 20 years.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Orlando and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society.

She is survived by one daughter, Barbara Cannon of Orlando; one granddaughter, Lori Cannon Hengber and husband, Peter, of Slidell, La.; one great-granddaughter, Ana Duncan of Slidell; one sister, Frances Bayer and husband, Arthur, of Ringgold; and many nieces and nephews.


In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her twin brother, Edwin Barkdoll; and another brother, Eugene Barkdoll.

A graveside service will be Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Ringgold Cemetery with Pastor Don Conley officiating.

The family will receive friends Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Carey Hand Colonial Funeral Home, Orlando.
