SEPT. 17, 1930-FEB. 14, 2009

MANASSAS, Va. - Harry Lester Yeatts Jr., 78, of Manassas, Va., died suddenly at home Saturday morning, Feb. 14, 2009.

Born Sept. 17, 1930, in Harrisburg, Pa., Harry was the son of the late Harry L. Yeatts Sr. and Anna R. Eshenour. He also was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth K. Yeatts.

Harry is survived by five children, three stepchildren, 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

In his youth, Harry lived in Hagerstown, Md., and graduated from Ferndale High School near Johnstown, Pa., and was affiliated with the Episcopal Church of Hagerstown.

He was a member of the U.S. Army, serving from 1952 to 1954. In the Army, he was an avid and accomplished artistic painter, woodwork joinery and completed a major full-wall mural while serving in Germany.

Prior to entering the Army, Harry married Patricia A. May. Together, they had three children, Cheryl A. Ruby, Larry L. Yeatts and W. Bryan Yeatts. He later married Sondra L. Ramp and together, they had two children, Jacqualine L. Surber and Deborah K. McGiffin. He also was the stepfather to Sondra's first three children, Cindy L. Heavener, Betty L. Whitmore and Dora J. Pullen.

Harry is survived by three brothers, Robert E. Yeatts of Washington, J. Richard Yeatts and Ronald D. Yeatts of California.

Throughout his life, Harry truly enjoyed oil painting, golfing, gardening, photography, traveling, building and remodeling, roller skating, slot car racing, playing chess and sweet cherry pie! Great friends were as important to him as was his family. His door was always open to those who needed a shoulder. In good times or bad, the grace of his hand was always available for the taking. He had an unyielding ability to give what was needed when you didn't know you were in need. His love of chess showed how he welcomed a good challenge with a worthy opponent, if they dare to try. His virtue of character never wavered. During the most unbearable times, he remained a pillar of strength to catch others when they had fallen. This gentle, yet soft spoken man has touched the lives of many on a profound level and will truly be missed by those left behind.
