GREENCASTLE, Pa. -- Shirley Jean Simmons Sweeney, 67, of 12093 Gearhart Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at her home.

Born March 18, 1941, in Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late William Simmons Sr. and Julia Appenzellar Thompson.

She graduated from James Buchanan High School in Mercersburg, Pa., with the class of 1959.

She worked for Mack Trucks in Hagerstown for more than 30 years, retiring in February 1994. She also was involved in the U.A.W. while at Mack Trucks.

She is survived by her husband of more than 35 years, Joseph W. Sweeney; one daughter, Annette McBeth of Greencastle; three stepdaughters, Lisa Sweeney and Tiffany Whitmore, both of Thurmont, Md., and Jody Darner of Waynesboro, Pa.; one stepson, Marty Sweeney of Thurmont; two brothers, William Simmons of Exeter, Pa., and Charles Simmons of Bear, Del.; one half brother, Robert Silvers of Corapeake, N.C.; two grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, Greencastle. The Rev. Warren Rice will officiate. Burial will follow in Mount Prospect Cemetery, Lewistown, Md.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 384 Floral Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201.
