YMCA Black Achievers to hold gala March 28

The Hagerstown YMCA Black Achievers will hold its annual gala Saturday, March 28, at Fountain Head Country Club.

This semiformal event begins with a social hour, followed by the dinner and program. Tickets cost $35 for adults, including those 12 and older, and $16 for those ages 4 to 11.

The theme for this year's event is "Destined for Greatness." The keynote speaker will be Kathy Parsons, a North Hagerstown High grad who went on to star in basketball at West Virginia University.

Gathering planned

A two-hour meeting to discuss tobacco control will be Saturday, Feb. 28, at 10 a.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center at 131 W. North Ave. in Hagerstown.


Representatives from the state and county health departments have been invited to participate in this discussion with black leaders and those working to help black leadership. A continental breakfast will be provided.

South High scholarships

The South Hagerstown High Alumni Association has announced it will be awarding $1,000 scholarships to two South High graduating seniors this spring.

The recipients of the scholarships must have plans to attend an accredited university, college, junior college, community college or business/technical/vocational school.

Applications are available in the South High guidance office. The deadline for receiving applications is April 1.

Blossom School on hold

Due to technical difficulties, the Blossom School of Etiquette classes have been postponed until further notice.
