Smithsburg's practices pay off perfectly

SMITHSBURG -- Practice makes perfect.

Just ask Smithsburg point guard Marissa Luipersbeck.

Luipersbeck made 8 of 10 free throws to finish with game-high totals of 14 points and three steals to help the Leopards earn a 50-28 win over No. 4 Boonsboro on Tuesday night in an MVAL Antietam game.

"We always practice foul shots and it paid off," Luipersbeck said. "We improved our defense. We pressured them real well and we boxed out everybody."

Allie Nickels had 12 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots, while Katie Sprecher scored 11 points for No. 7 Smithsburg (14-6, 8-2). Sara Rishell added 11 rebounds, five blocked shots and five assists, while Emily Hargreaves had three assists for the Leopards.

"Defense was the biggest reason for improvement since our loss to Williamsport," Smithsburg coach Katy Barnhart said. "We tried to focus on man-to-man defense and stop their penetration. We played very well as a team tonight."

Luipersbeck was another key.

"Marissa Luipersbeck handled the ball real well for us like she has all year," Barnhart said. "Tonight, she just handled the pressure very well."

The Leopards' defense held Brynn Arnone, the Warriors' leading scorer, scoreless.

Courtney Silvis topped Boonsboro (15-5, 9-1) with nine points, while Emma Dalton had nine rebounds and Alison Griffith added six rebounds.

"We didn't come to play," Boonsboro coach Max Shaffer said. "We didn't have any intensity. They outhustled us. They just wanted it more."

Smithsburg led 20-12 by halftime.

Luipersbeck scored three straight baskets to cap a 14-2 run in the first 4 1/2 minutes of the third quarter to increase Smithsburg's advantage to 34-14.

The Warriors cut the deficit to 38-26 with 6:17 remaining, but got no closer.
