Prevatt waives preliminary hearing

February 18, 2009

A 26-year-old man charged in an August standoff at a motel in Hancock waived his right Wednesday to a preliminary hearing in Washington County District Court on unrelated charges, including second-degree burglary, first-degree burglary, theft $500 plus value and other charges.

James Abraham Prevatt III, 26, formerly of Moncks Corner, S.C., and his girlfriend, Rene Leyette Reynolds, also of Moncks Corner, were arrested Aug. 22, 2008, after a 45-hour standoff at Americas Best Value Inn. During the standoff, Prevatt portrayed Reynolds as a hostage, Maryland State Police said. Police later alleged Reynolds was complicit in the situation.

A string of burglary and theft charges later was filed against Prevatt in connection with 11 unrelated burglaries and thefts throughout Washington County in the weeks leading up to the standoff, according to court records.

Thirty-three charges were filed against Prevatt in connection with the burglaries and thefts, according to court records.

A warrant with the 33 charges was issued in October, but was not served until later because Prevatt had been transferred to another facility due to mental health concerns, state police said.
