Poetry contest



The Washington County Free Library is accepting entries for its 11th annual Washington County Poetry Contest.

Poems may be submitted to the library anytime through Tuesday, March 31. Hand deliver your poem to the children's department or send entries to: Washington County Free Library, 100 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, MD 21740, attention: poetry contest. Include on your typed or legibly written poem your name, address, telephone number and age division. The age divisions are: grades two and three; grades four and five; grades six through eight; grades nine through 12; and adult. Open to Washington County residents only.

Poems must be original work and may be in any style and no longer than one page in length. Poetry contest winners will be announced Thursday, April 23, which is the 445th anniversary of William Shakespeare's birthday. Winning poems will be displayed at the library.

A reception will be held to honor the poets. They will receive a volume of poetry and get to read their winning poems aloud. At the reception, a book of poetry will be awarded for the first- and second-place winning entries in each division, with honorable mention certificates awarded for third place. The Green Mile



The Green Mile(s), the inaugural 5-kilometer, and one- or two-mile walk hosted by North Hagerstown High School's Environment Club will be Saturday, March 14. Registration is at 11 a.m. and the race begins at noon at North Hagerstown High School, 1200 Pennsylvania Ave. in Hagerstown.

Fees are $5 without a T-shirt, and $10 with a T-shirt. Race day registration is the same, but there is no guarantee of a T-shirt. T-shirts are only guaranteed to those who register before Sunday, March 1. Benefits North High's Environment Club to buy trees and support other school environmental projects.
