CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Stewart C. "Ted" Bender, 102, of 6796 White Rock Road, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Jan. 19, 1907, in Fayetteville, Pa., he was the son of the late Harry D. and Frances R. Cook Bender.

His first wife, Mary Rhone Bender, died in 1935. His second wife, Stella I. Shaffer Bender, died April 7, 1979. They were married in July 1942.


He attended Duffield School.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

In 1941, he started working at Frick Co. in Waynesboro as a crane operator. He retired in 1972 after 31 years of service.

He was a member of Pond Bank Independent Church, where he taught Sunday school and was a member of the adult Sunday school class.

He is survived by three children, Clarence J. Bender, Paul S. Bender and Sarah J. Bumbaugh, all of Pond Bank; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Lina I. Bender; one son, Hugh Bender; one sister, Lina I. Wagaman; and three brothers, Hugh Bender, George Bender and infant brother, Clarence Bender.

Services will be held for family and close friends Thursday at 11 a.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro. The Revs. Mervil R. Stambaugh and Joseph C. Carolin will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery near Scotland, Pa.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
