February 15, 2009|By JULIE E. GREENE

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Six Eastern Panhandle residents will compete Saturday night for two pageant crowns and, ultimately, the chance to be the next Miss America.

The crowns up for grabs at the Apollo Civic Theatre are Miss Berkeley County and Miss North Eastern, according to Shelley Nichols-Franklin, the pageant's executive director.

The contestants include the reigning Miss North Eastern, Amber Miller, and the reigning Miss Shenandoah Valley, Melissa Godwin.

Each winner will receive a $700 scholarship and will compete in the Miss West Virginia pageant in Morgantown, W.Va., in June, Franklin said. The first runner-up will get $200.

The women will be scored on a private interview, an onstage interview, talent performance, appearance in an evening gown and appearance in swimwear, according to Nichols-Franklin.
