Preps Area Roundup -- Northstars cap season with state title

February 15, 2009

The Washington County Northstars won the Maryland Provisional State Tournament title with a 3-0 victory over Northwest/Germantown on Sunday at the Hagerstown Ice & Sports Complex.

"We're excited, but it's kind of a letdown because now the season's over and it's time to move on," said Northstars coach Jamie Blackwood, whose team finished the season with a 15-2 record.

A goal by Mitchell Sirface gave the Northstars a 1-0 lead in the first period. Andrew Lowery and Eric Bowers scored the game's final two goals in a span of 10 seconds in the third period. Dakota Durning, Lowery and Bowers each had an assist, and Alex Benda stopped 13 shots in the shutout.

"It was a tough game, a very physical game," Blackwood said. "They gave us everything we could handle. Their goalie did everything but stand on his ear. He had 34 saves."
