Preps Area Roundup -- Northstars reach state final

PREP ICE HOCKEY



The Washington County Northstars went 2-0 on Saturday in the Maryland Divisional State Tournament, routing Gaithersburg 10-0 before defeating Thomas Stone 7-2 in the semifinals.

Alex Sweeney had a hat trick to lead the Northstars against Gaithersburg, while Eric Bowers had two goals and three assists and Andrew Lowery added two goals. Mitchell Sirface, Dakota Durning and Keith Koontz also scored, while Sirface, Koontz, Zach Kimmel and Joe Blackwood had two assists each and Andrew Baker and Matthew Stemper each had one assist.

In the semifinal win, Blackwood, Sweeney and Baker each scored twice, Bowers had a goal and two assists and Durning added a pair of assists. Sirface, Kimmel and John Lowery also had an assist.

The Northstars will play in the state final today at noon at the Hagerstown Ice & Sports Complex.

No. 4 Jefferson 61, Morgantown 53

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. -- Dewey McDonald led Jefferson with 20 points, eight rebounds and six assists in the Cougars' win against Morgantown (10-6).

Garrett Grantham tallied 17 points and three blocks for Jefferson (9-7), which pulled away with a 17-8 fourth quarter.

CRESAPTOWN, Md. -- Tyler Gibson scored 15 points and hit a pair of 3-pointers, but it was not enough on Friday for Faith Christian in an MDCC loss to Calvary Christian.

Brandon Hoy added eight points and six rebounds for Faith (6-14, 5-7).

Dakeea Marshall scored 25 points for Jefferson, which used a 24-6 second-quarter run to beat St. Maria Goretti.

Melissa Taylor had 16 points, Dezi Clinton scored 12 points and Tanisha Murray added 10 points for the Cougars (13-7).

Angie Nevarez had a game-high 28 points and five steals for the Gaels (12-15). Maggie Garvey had five steals and Colleen Costello grabbed six rebounds.

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -- Katie Scanlon scored 21 points to lead Mercersburg Academy over Lawrenceville in the consolation bracket of the Mid-Atlantic Prep League tournament.

The Blue Storm (8-15) rallied for the victory, outscoring Lawrenceville 20-6 in the fourth period. Taylor Riley scored 19 for Mercersburg.
