BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Stanley Eugene Shoemaker Sr., 72, of Berkeley Springs, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, at Morgan County (W.Va.) War Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 9, 1936, he was the son of the late Cleveland Tobias Sr. and Mary Reed Shoemaker.

He attended Hancock High School.

In 1994, he retired from the Morgan County Board of Education, where he was a custodian at North Berkeley Elementary School.

He retired from the U.S. Army Reserve, as a Sergeant Major.

He was a Protestant.

He was a member and former chief of Morgan County Volunteer Rescue Squad and a member of London Fog Fast Pitch Softball Team.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine Ann Shoemaker; one son, Stanley E. Shoemaker Jr. of Berkeley Springs; five sisters, Lou Swaim, Ann Knable, Faye Corbett and Phyllis Shives, all of Hancock and Charlotte Keefer of Hagerstown; three grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Hill; and three brothers, Cleveland Shoemaker Jr., Roy Shoemaker and Earl Shoemaker.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home in Berkeley Springs. Pastor Jeff Hawbaker will officiate. Burial will be in Greenway Cemetery in Berkeley Springs.

The family will receive friends Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
