Police involved in standoff

February 14, 2009

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- A man who called Franklin County 911 Friday afternoon threatening suicide gave himself up to the Chambersburg Police Department after less than two hours.

The 46-year-old man had called the 911 center at 2:34 p.m. saying he was going to kill himself, Sgt. Richard Swartz said.

The police department's Special Emergency Team and Crisis Negotiation Team were called to the scene in the 800 block of South Fourth Street, Swartz said. While police were attempting to make contact with the man, he came out of the house at 5:20 p.m., Swartz said.

During the standoff, fire police cordoned off an area of several blocks around the house and detoured traffic. Those precautions were taken because police did know whether the man had any weapons or what his intentions were, Swartz said.

After the man surrendered, he was taken to Chambersburg Hospital for an evaluation, Swartz said. Police did not release the man's name.
