Not just blowing hot air

February 13, 2009

If you have a vehicle with a belt-driven cooling fan (OK, it's going to be an old vehicle) that draws air through the radiator to help regulate engine temperature, Flex-a-lite reports that you can recover up to 17 horsepower and some fuel economy with the 160 Black Magic S-Blade electric fan.

Provided you have the room (the 160 is designed to fit radiator cores 16 inches and wider), the universal-fit piece is a "puller" design, which means it goes on the engine side of the radiator once you've had the factory belt-driven fan removed (keep the belt and pulley since they're needed to run the water pump). Built in is a thermostat that's adjustable from 160-240 F as well as an air-conditioning relay.

The new eight-blade design helps this unit pull a whopping 3,000 cubic feet per minute of air through the radiator, probably as much or more than most (if not all) fans this size.
