Race tracks open for the season

If Nathan Durboraw has it his way, Roy Deese Jr. will be staring down the back bumper of Durboraw's No. 41 car this season at Hagerstown Speedway.

Durboraw, 52, of Cearfoss, has won more Cindy Rowe Auto Glass Late Models championships at the speedway than anyone. He's two ahead of Deese and Denny Bonebrake, who are tied at six each.

All three men are still racing. Deese won the points championship last year. Durboraw finished second. That's close enough, says Durboraw, who says he'll be gunning for his ninth points championship.

"I wasn't really running for the points" last year, Durboraw says. "When I'm gunning for it, I win it."

Durboraw expects to participate in the speedway's first race of the season, the Octoberfest Qualifier on Saturday, Feb. 28.

Drag strip opens

Mason-Dixon Dragway, east of Hagerstown, will open for drivers to test their vehicles on March 1 and will have its first race March 28.

The dragway was widened from 43 feet to 60 feet last year to meet National Hot Rod Association standards that go into effect this year, owner Elmer Wachter said.

The dragway hosted about 12,000 drag cars during last year's events, Wachter said.

Tractor pulls will not be held this year at Mason-Dixon, but the dragway will host a new event in June - the 26th annual Sled Scene East of Kustom Kemps of America. Approximately 1,000 customized cars and trucks attended a Kansas KKOA event last year, and a KKOA car show held in Biglerville, Pa., last year outgrew that site, Wachter said.

Mason Dixon's Sled Scene East will include a car show, race and swap meet.

Big shows at the speedway

At Hagerstown Speedway, west of Hagerstown, monster trucks will return in July.

But for die-hard race fans, the season kicks off Feb. 21 when 410 sprints and late models race.

So if points haven't driven Durboraw after 30 years of racing, what has?

"I like the thrill of it. And I like the people. And my grandkids, they love it. And as long as I'm healthy, I'll do it," says Durboraw, who owns M&N Duboraw & Sons Excavating in Hagerstown.

Durboraw says he was going to quit racing a couple of years ago, but didn't because he still enjoys racing and his seven grandchildren and great-granddaughter love watching him.

Durboraw has been able to get a picture with each of them in victory lane.

"I like doing it," he said, "because they can stand up and cheer that, 'That's my pap up there.'"
