'Love Story'

The Smithsburg Library will show the 1970 movie "Love Story" in the community room Friday at 7 p.m. free of charge.

Call 301-824-7722 to reserve a seat. The film is rated PG. Refreshments will be served.

The Smithsburg Library is a branch of the Washington County Free Library.




TOPS 462

At its last meeting, TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 462 in Smithsburg had a no-gain week, the first one of the year.

John, the group leader, led the program on how a nap might help you with your weight-loss goals.

This week, Sandy will talk about "Metabolism's Impact on Weight Loss."

The group meets Thursdays at St. Paul's United Methodist Church's Catherine Hall in Smithsburg. Weigh-in starts at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting runs from 6 to 7 p.m. For more information, call Ola at 301-824-7650 or John at 717-749-3023.




Lions Club

The Chewsville Lions Club is selling ham sandwiches.

Orders can be given to any member or call Lion Warren Middlekauff Sr. at 301-739-3298 to place orders and arrange for pickup.

Sandwiches cost $3 for country ham and $2.50 for city ham.

Proceeds go to help those in the community. Orders must be placed by Feb. 17 and can be picked up on Feb. 19 and 20.

Registration

The Washington County Girls Softball League will hold registration for girls in grades three through eight at Dick's Sporting Goods in the Centre at Hagerstown (Wal-Mart Shopping Center) on the following dates:

Saturdays Feb. 14 and Feb. 28; from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and at Extra Innings in Hagerstown on Wednesdays, Feb. 18, and Feb. 25, from 5 to 8 p.m.; and Saturday, Feb. 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration costs $40, due at signup. Coat drive

Democrats for Positive Change will host its first coat drive Saturday at the Democratic Central Committee Headquarters, 245 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Clean coats, jackets, scarves, hats, gloves, earmuffs and boots, including clothing for infants, will be accepted.

Items for women and children will be donated to CASA and men's items to The Salvation Army. You can also include a Valentine's Day treat with the children's items.

Pet portraits

Pet owners can have a portrait taken with their pets when local photographer Chris Heurich hosts My Fuzzy Valentine Portraits at Long Meadow Shopping Center.

The event will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For a donation of $20, pet owners will have a 15-minute professional photography sitting with Heurich, receive a free 5-by-7 photograph of their pet and the opportunity to purchase additional photographs.

"I thought this would be a wonderful opportunity to help the Humane Society and to give pet owners the chance to have a professional portrait with their pet on this special day," Heurich said. "Volunteers will be on hand to help as pets melt their human's hearts by sitting pretty and batting their long eyelashes."

To reserve a sitting, call 301-733-2060, ext. 237. Sittings will be on a first-come, first-served basis and reservations are recommended.




HCC

Hagerstown Community College's Academic Advising Department recently announced its upcoming schedule of spring transfer visits from area colleges and universities.

Through these transfer visits, HCC students will be given the opportunity to meet with representatives from Frostburg State University, Shepherd University, Shippensburg University and University of Maryland, Hagerstown, in order to ask questions, discuss options, and determine the best means possible for transferring from HCC to a four-year school. Upcoming transfer visits include:
