Phyllis Maxine Emmert, 85, of Hagerstown, formerly of the Broadmore, passed away Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009, at Julia Manor Health Care Center, Hagerstown.

Born on July 30, 1923, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Luther Barnabus and Mary Jane (Wagner) Sweigert.

She worked as a secretary in the local Social Security office in Hagerstown.

She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, Hagerstown, where she served on the Altar Guild and the Service Workers, and was a former Sunday school teacher. She also was a member of the Morris Frock American Legion No. 42 Ladies Auxiliary, and a member of the Hits's and Misses and the Precious Stones Bowling League, where she served as the team's treasurer and statistician.


Phyllis is survived by two daughters, Alice Gaither and husband, Ron, of Aston, Pa., and Barbara Hendershot and husband, Randy, of Clear Spring; a son, David Chris Emmert and wife, Cheryl, of Hagerstown; a brother, Luther B. Sweigert of Hagerstown; six grandchildren, Sarah Bergman, Emily Franks, Geoffrey Gaither, Amber Hendershot, Brett Hendershot and David B. Emmert; and one great-grandson, Ethan Bergman.

In addition to her parents, she also was preceded in death by her husband, David S. Emmert, and by one brother, Robert W. Sweigert.

Funeral services will be held at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, with the Rev. Don Stevenson officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Friends will be received Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
