W.Va. Math-a-Thon aids St. Jude's

February 09, 2009

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Valley View Elementary School students in Berkeley County are taking part in a Math-a-Thon this month to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, school communication leader Leigh Temple announced Wednesday.

Temple encouraged parents to participate and help their children get sponsors for a community service project that she said would encourage students to take responsibility and help children who suffer from serious illnesses.

Students who raise $35 or more will receive a T-shirt, certificate and admission ticket to Six Flags theme park.

Students who raise $75 will earn a backpack in addition to the other items, Temple said.

The fundraising project is being done in coordination with completion of fun-to-do age-appropriate math problems.

"Three cents to five cents for every problem worked would bring in $7.50 to $12.50 from each sponsor," Temple said.
