MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - John L. Fitzwater III, 62, of Martinsburg, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009, at his home.

Born May 1, 1946, in Parkersburg, W.Va., he was the son of Helen Cottrill Fitzwater and the late John L. Fitzwater Jr.

He was a 1975 graduate of West Virginia University.

He was a teacher at James Rumsey Technical Institute for 32 years.

He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Mountain Lake Park, Md.

He was a member of Squirrel Lovers Club, Chicago, and in his youth attained the Eagle Scout, and God and Country Awards.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 18 years, Shirley Byram Fitzwater; two sons, John L. Fitzwater IV and James C. Fitzwater I; one sister, Jann F. Swiger of Mountain Lake Park; two brothers, Franklin Fitzwater of Mountain Lake Park and Rick Beckman of Swanton, Md.; two grandchildren; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; and the mother of his sons, Nora Corey.


Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. Pastor Marshall Johnson and Capt. Melvin Welch will officiate. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
