February 09, 2009

WASHINGTON COUNTY -- Mary Anne Burke has been appointed executive director of the Washington County Arts Council, Donna Newcomer, president of the board of directors, said Monday in a prepared release.

Burke has served as the interim director since October, replacing former Executive Director Kevin Moriarty.

Burke's fundraising and leadership experience has included the Maryland Symphony Orchestra; the Washington County Free Library; the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts; Leadership Washington County; and Breast Cancer Awareness-Cumberland Valley, the release says. She is president of the Rotary Club of Hagerstown-Sunrise.

Burke is to complete a master's of science degree in strategic leadership from Mountain State University in August, the release says.

For the last nine years, Burke worked as marketing director for the Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce. She previously was executive director of Leadership Hagerstown and director of the Professional Development Center (HCC), a federal grant program that provides equity programs and funding for women in education throughout the state of Maryland. She also has served as director of social services at St. Martin's Home in Catonsville, Md., and Stella Maris Hospice in Towson, Md.
