HCC offering courses on WWII battles

This spring, Hagerstown Community College's Center for Continuing Education is offering two courses on strategic battles of World War II.

The first course, "Invasion of Crete," will be Thursdays from Feb. 26 to March 12, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in HCC's Valley Mall Center.

Taught by HCC instructor and historian Jeff Driscoll, the course chronicles the battle for Crete, which occurred May 20 to June 1, 1941, and its strategic importance for both sides during the war.

Discussion topics include background history, the invasion itself and long- term results of the Battle of Crete. Cost is $50.

The second course, "Invasion of Sicily," will be Thursdays from April 9 to 30, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in HCC's Valley Mall Center.

This course chronicles the invasion of Sicily, also known as "Operation Husky," in 1944.

Taught by Driscoll, discussion topics include the historical background of the invasion of Italy, as well as the results and final outcome of the Italian invasion. Cost is $65.
