'Cats lose touch in loss to Catoctin

WILLIAMSPORT -- The Williamsport girls basketball team hit more field goals in the first five minutes of the game than it did in the final 24.

That was the recipe for a 50-39 MVAL Antietam loss to Catoctin on Friday as the Wildcats managed just four field goals in the final three quarters.

The Cougars' win avenges a four-point loss to Williamsport earlier in the season.

"We're just not a very good shooting team," said Williamsport coach Chris Malott. "This isn't new. We've even designed plays to put them in position to shoot layups."

Ironically, Williamsport (6-10, 3-4) managed to keep the game close on the strength of its free-throw shooting. The Wildcats trailed by five after three quarters by hitting 16 of 26 from the stripe.

But the Wildcats managed just 5 of 14 from the line in the final eight minutes (21 of 40 for the game) as the Cougars (5-12, 3-4) gradually pulled away.

"It definitely wasn't pretty, "said Catoctin coach Amy Murray. "But the first word that comes to mind is heart. They beat us on our home court by four and that really stung. The girls wanted this one really bad."

The Wildcats had considerably more success from the floor early in the game, taking a 9-4 lead with the help of four layups.

Sparked by Kylie Late and Hannah Metheny, Catoctin reeled off eight straight points untile Kayla Ewing responded with four points in a 7-2 Wildcats run to tie the score at 20.

Six points in the final 97 seconds of the half gave Catoctin a six-point edge at the intermission.

The Cougars extended the lead to 34-22 midway through the third quarter, but Williamsport went on a 12-1 run -- anchord by eight points from the free throw line -- to pull to within one with 5:08 left.

Catoctin outscored the Wildcats 15-5 the rest of the way to secure the win.
