IRS to offer Sat. hours for EITC help

February 05, 2009

Internal Revenue Service Taxpayer Assistance Centers in Maryland will open their doors on some Saturdays to expand service to area taxpayers who are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).

The Hagerstown IRS walk-in office at 1260 Maryland Ave. will be open Saturdays, Feb. 7 and Feb. 21, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., to help potentially eligible taxpayers who might not be able to seek assistance during the week.

The EITC is a refundable credit that can total more than $4,800 for eligible taxpayers in Maryland. Taxpayers with incomes of $41,646 or less might be eligible to claim this credit, depending on their filing status.

Taxpayers wanting to know if they qualify for the credit may visit a local Maryland IRS office, where workers are available to answer questions, offer additional information, provide publications and help prepare returns claiming the credit.

More information about the credit can be found at www.IRS.gov.

On the IRS Web site is an online tool, the EITC Assistant, to help taxpayers determine whether they are eligible for the credit.
