Officials: Crash did not cause death

February 05, 2009

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - A Morgan County, W.Va., woman who was pronounced dead after the vehicle she was driving early Thursday crashed into a tree along Hedgesville Road (W.Va. 9) did not appear to have died from injuries related to the accident, officials said.

The name of the 58-year-old woman from Great Cacapon, W.Va., was not released by Berkeley County Sheriff Kenneth M. Lemaster Jr. because he had not received confirmation that the victim's family had been notified.

The accident occurred west of Hedgesville, near Butts Mill Road, and was reported at 6:22 a.m.

"It may have been related to a medical condition," Lemaster said.

Medical examiner Donald Shirley said he concluded the injuries the woman had from the accident in the 7000 block of Hedgesville Road did not appear to be consistent with causing her death.

An autopsy will be performed in Morgantown, W.Va., to determine the cause of death, Shirley said.

Lemaster said investigating deputies Kevin Huffman and Lt. Ron Gardner found no brake marks on the road that would have suggested the woman attempted to stop the 1997 Chevrolet Blazer she was driving from crashing or that any other vehicle was involved in the accident.
