SCD holding annual tree sale

The Washington County Soil Conservation District is conducting its 21st annual tree sale until March 23.

The district has distributed more than 290,000 trees over the past 20 years. Contact the district at 301-797-6821, ext. 3, to receive a tree sale order form in the mail. Order forms may also be printed from the Conservation District Web site at Tree descriptions and pictures as well as information about all the products being offered are also available at the Web site.

Trees will be available for pickup in early April in time for spring planting season. Anyone ordering trees will be contacted by mail with the specific days, times and location of where to pick up their trees.

The district will be offering a variety of evergreen, hardwood and ornamental trees. Red Delicious apple, Green Granny Smith apple, Harmony Peach, Redhaven peach trees, and Red Heritage raspberry bushes are also being offered. One each of the apple trees has to be purchased for proper pollination. One each of the pear trees must be purchased for proper pollination. Redhaven and Harmony Peach trees may be purchased as single trees and will pollinate themselves.


The office is at 1260 Maryland Ave., Suite 101, in Hagerstown.

o Evergreen seedlings offered this year will be Eastern White Pine, Norway Spruce, Colorado Blue Spruce and Douglas Fir (Lincoln). All of these species will be 3-year-old seedlings. These seedlings will be sold in packs of 25 trees for $15 and range in size from 8 to 24 inches depending on the species.

o Transplant stock, which are older, larger trees are again being offered. These species include Eastern White Pine, Norway Spruce, Douglas Fir (Deep Mtn), Concolor Fir and Colorado Blue Spruce. These trees are 4 to 6 years old and range in size from 8 to 36 inches depending on the species. These trees will be sold in packs of 10 for $20.

o Hardwoods available are Red Oak, Black Oak and Chinese Chestnut. Both species of oak are sold in packs of 10 trees. The Chinese Chestnut trees are sold individually and are 6 feet tall. The Red Oaks and Black Oaks will be 2 to 3 feet tall. The Red Oak trees and Black Oak trees will cost $12. The Chinese Chestnut trees will cost $18 each.

o There will be four different ornamental trees sold this year. One ornamental is the Red Adams Flowering Crabapple and another is the White Snowdrift Flowering Crabapple. Both trees will be 5 to 6 feet tall and cost $20 each. A deep purple Ludwig Lilac will be 2 to 3 feet tall and cost $15 each. Red Bud trees will also be available this year. The Red Bud trees will be 3 to 4 feet tall and cost $5 each.

o The district will again be offering Leyland Cypress trees. These fast-growing trees are very popular for the home landscape because of their ability to produce an effective windbreak or screen in a shorter time than many other species. The trees will be 2.5 to 3 feet tall and cost $12 each. These trees are potted while all of the other varieties offered are bare root stock.

o Again this year is a selection of high quality wildlife products. Eastern Bluebird Nest boxes, Hanging Wren Nest boxes, Sunflower Bird Feeders, and three-chambered bat houses are available. The bluebird box costs $20, the flat top wren box costs $17 and the small sunflower bird feeder is on sale for $23. The three-chamber bat house is available for $49. Promote bats on your property for natural insect control because bats can eat up to 600 small insects per hour. All of these products feature stainless steel screws, aluminum hinges and are constructed of kiln dried cedar. These are the highest quality products the district has ever offered and have shown to be extremely durable outdoors. Samples of these products, as well as, approximately 15 other feeders and nest boxes are available for customers to view at the Conservation District Office.

o Once again this year, Plantskydd Deer Repellant is for sale. Plantskydd is considered the most cost-effective and environmentally safe animal repellant for deer, opossum and rabbit. A 1.32-gallon bottle of Ready Mix costs $52. The one-pound granular shaker of Plantskyyd is available for a price of $21. Fertilizer tablets in packs of 25 and 50 are also available for sale.
