Resident supports youth center

February 04, 2009

SMITHSBURG - A Smithsburg resident said Tuesday night she believes the town should have a youth center, a concept supported by town officials.

Lisa Linthicum said she believes youths need the center to keep them off the streets and to give them productive ways to spend their time.

Linthicum told Smithsburg Town Council members she would like to see the center established in a building in town, not a basement, and was looking for the support of the mayor and council members.

Mayor Mildred "Mickey" Myers said the idea has been brought up numerous times.

Although Myers said she did not know precisely how the town could get involved, council members voted to support the idea for a youth center.

Linthicum and council members discussed possible revenue sources for such a center and Linthicum said she would help raise money for the center.

"I have the desire and the dedication to do this," Linthicum said.
