Smithsburg EMS busy in Jan.

SMITHSBURG - In a busy start for 2009, Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services (SEMS) responded to 107 calls in January.

During the month there were 16 responses within Smithsburg town limits, and 14 responses to the Leitersburg and Ringgold areas. There were 12 calls to the Mount Aetna area and six to the Cascade/Pen Mar area.

Mutual-aid calls to neighboring counties included 14 to Frederick County, Md., and two to Franklin County, Pa. Another 10 calls were to the Hagerstown area.

During the month, SEMS personnel transported 71 patients to area hospitals.

In addition to providing assistance on four fire calls, two standby crews were sent to different stations.

A crew was sent to the Potomac Valley Fire Co. in Dargan after the loss of its president.

Another crew provided support to The Volunteer Fire Co. of Halfway while their members attended their annual banquet.
