RANSON, W.Va. - Howard H. "Duke" Anderson, 87, of Ranson, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, at Winchester (Va.) Medical Center.

Born July 15, 1921, in Ranson, he was the son of the late Clarence E. and Emma Virginia Packett Anderson.

He retired from J&L Steel Co., Blair, W.Va., after 40 years of service.

He was a member of Heritage Free Will Baptist Church in Inwood, W.Va.

He was a member of Hillbilly Ranger Band with WEPM radio station, Martinsburg, W.Va.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth Ann Campbell Anderson; four daughters, Ann E. Kelican, Stevanna Sigler and Vanessa Higgs, all of Ranson, and Janet Painter of Charles Town, W.Va.; one son, Howard Anderson of Charles Town; 17 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Roger E. Anderson; three sisters, Pauline A. Caponello, Nellie Anderson and Rosebud Pearl; and three brothers, Harland L. Anderson, Jack Anderson and George Anderson. He was the last of his immediate family.


Services will at Thursday at 2 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town. Pastor Richard Nethercutt will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
