Around Funkstown

Shadowy figure

I can deal with it.

So the groundhog says six more weeks of winter ... I could have looked at the calendar and told you the first day of spring is not for six more weeks, anyway. I guess it's just the optimist in me that says "just six more weeks of winter." Let's see what we can fill those next few weeks with while we wait on our crocuses and more pleasant weather.

Calling all alumni

The next South Hagerstown High School's Alumni Association meeting will be Thursday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. in the school's media center. All alumni are encouraged to attend. For more information, go to www.shhsrebelalumni.org.

Band basket bingo

While we are talking about South High, let's give the Band Boosters a plug.

On Sunday, March 1, the South High Band Boosters will hold a basket bingo at the Elks Lodge on Robinwood Drive. Tickets cost $25 and include a hot lunch. You must be 18 to play tip jars and bingo. There will be 24 games plus special raffles. Bingo begins at 1:30 p.m., the doors open at 11:30 a.m. and lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m.

Pancake breakfast

Have you done your good deed for the month? OK, how about have you taken your family out for pancakes recently? Well, why not do both. The annual Habitat for Humanity pancake breakfast will be Saturday at First Christian Church on Potomac Avenue. Breakfast will be from 7 to 11 a.m. Tickets cost $5 in advance and $5.50 at the door.

Singing valentines

I am not trying to ignore the obvious ...yes, Valentine's Day is approaching quickly. Less than two weeks to get flowers ordered and chocolates in hand. Tired of the traditional valentine surprises? Want to really impress that special someone with something a little different and unique?

The Mason-Dixon Barbershop Chorus is taking reservations for their singing valentines Feb. 13 and 14. For $40, a barbershop quartet will arrive at your loved one's place, dressed to the nines and serenade them with two songs, present them with a card, and a small remembrance of the occasion. As you can imagine, this group books early and fast. In Maryland, call 301-730-7078. In Pennsylvania, call 717-328-3674.

That's all, folks

Have a most blessed and productive week. Show kindness and sincerity ... temper your words ... be supportive to others and most of all ... find time to laugh.
