February 03, 2009

Police have charged a Hagerstown man with shooting another man during a Smithsburg robbery last month.

Anthony Caldwell, 25, was arrested Tuesday at 920 Hamilton Blvd., an acquaintance's home, according to Investigator Greg Alton of the Washington County Sheriff's Department, which worked with Hagerstown Police on the case.

Alton said police believe Caldwell shot Bruce Allen Jones of Hagerstown in the chest on Federal Lookout Road on Jan. 27. Jones survived the shooting.

Louis Geraldo Gonzalez, 27, of Hagerstown, was charged last month in connection with the shooting.

Caldwell and Gonzalez face counts of attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault and second-degree assault, as well as other charges of robbery and conspiracy.

Alton said Gonzalez is believed to have participated in the robbery and to have driven Caldwell away from the scene.

Alton said Caldwell and Gonzalez set up a plan to get Jones to Federal Lookout Road to rob him.
