Miranda Payne scored six of her 16 points in the overtime period as the Hagerstown Community College women's basketball team won its sixth straight game Friday night, beating Cecil Community College 68-62 at the HCC athletic complex.

"It was a great win tonight," Palmer said. "Our players stepped up in overtime. I thought it was a great team effort. I think that we are helping each other more. I think that we are more positive with each other. We are supporting each other better. I don't think that we have played our best yet, but we are playing better."

The overtime started with Payne getting a steal and turning it into a layup to put Hagerstown (13-9, 8-2 Maryland JuCo Conference) on top, 60-58.

Ashley Jones, who hauled in 23 rebounds, got two baskets off offensive rebounds to help Cecil (11-6, 5-3) move ahead, 62-60.

But the Hawks scored the final eight points to get the win.

Amy Rhoderick came up with a basket with 1:33 remaining to tie the score and Payne made two free throws to give HCC the lead for good at 64-62 with 1:12 to go.

"I tried to penetrate," Payne said. "If there was nobody open, then I just tried to draw the foul. I'm glad that I made all of my foul shots in overtime."

Sophomore Cara Thompson collected game-high totals of 24 points and six 3-pointers to go along with six rebounds for HCC. Valentina Wheeler contributed 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Hawks. Shawayna Morel ended up with 16 rebounds, four steals and four assists for HCC.
