Conn. orchestra considering Schulze

January 29, 2009

Elizabeth Schulze, music director and conductor of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, is one of six finalists for the position of music director for the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra, according to that orchestra's Web site.

If Schulze is chosen for the job and accepts it, it would not affect her position with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, said Andrew Kipe, executive director for the MSO.

More than 220 people applied for the ECSO position.

Each of the six finalists was scheduled to conduct a concert during the 2008-09 season. Schulze conducted a concert for the ECSO on Jan. 24, the Web site shows.

Schulze is also music director of the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra in Flagstaff, Ariz.

In December 2006, Schulze's contract with the MSO was extended through the 2011-12 season.

"We wish her well," Kipe said.
