CHERRY RUN, W.Va. - Gilbert Ellsworth "Gib" Murphy, 88, of Cherry Run, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Aug. 10, 1920, in Cherry Run, he was the son of the late Russell Edward and Mary Nancy Kemp Murphy.

He attended Berkeley Springs (W.Va.) High School.

He retired from CSX Railroad, as a trackman.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Sleepy Creek, W.Va.

He was a member of Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post 60 and a past councilor of Junior Order of United American Mechanics Council 117.


He is survived by two sisters, Ruby L. Murphy of Cherry Run and Martha M. McMahan of Cleveland, Tenn.; nieces; and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Geraldine F. Matysek; and two brothers, Marvin I. Murphy and Elmer R. Murphy.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church in Sleepy Creek. The Rev. Daniel L. Montague III will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery with graveside military honors.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home in Berkeley Springs, which will open at 9 a.m. Visitation also will be Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
