Obama has nothing to lose

To the editor:

On Jan. 20, the world observed the historic inauguration of Barack Obama to the presidency of the United States, marking the first time in history that a person of color ascended to this position. I watched his swearing in and acceptance speech with pride because I knew what his election symbolized for this nation. I also wondered if anyone who followed the election noted that President Obama would helm the most successful administration in U.S. history.

President Obama approached his election campaign as an intelligent, well-educated and likeable man who projected the common touch like no other candidate. He quickly gained the support of the majority of the media outlets and the majority of the entertainment industry. America was engaged in two wars and the sitting president possessed the lowest approval rating ever. When an economic crisis developed, a perfect storm formed that culminated in America electing the least qualified president in American history.

Regardless of his lack of qualifications or choices in administration, President Obama cannot possibly have a failed tenure. If his policies fail to resuscitate the economy, the sycophantic media and his legion of supporters will remind us that the economy was a disaster when he was sworn in, the worst since the Great Depression (it isn't, yet) and blame should be laid at the feet of the Bush administration.

If the economy revives, regardless of President Obama's actions, he will gain full credit. If he fails to bring our troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan, his defenders will again scream loudly of the failed management of the Bush administration. If this country faces a terrorist attack, once again, the root causes will be traced to the Bush administration. Anyone who attempts to legitimately criticize President Obama will be branded a racist by columnists who fill the editorial pages of many of this country's newspapers. The House and Senate are solidly in the hands of the Democrats, so little opposition to his executive directives will be expected from his political opponents and any mounted will be easily defeated. This is the foundation on which President Obama will build his government.

President Obama is in a perfect position to govern without the fear of criticism, as he has an instant boogeyman in the previous administration, a biased news machine and a country tired of war and economic tragedy. He has nothing to lose. America has everything to lose.
