Hearing waived in child neglect case

January 27, 2009

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A 26-year-old Martinsburg man accused of fracturing his 5-month-old daughter's skull in an alleged abuse and neglect incident in October 2008 waived his right to a preliminary hearing Monday, according to Berkeley County Magistrate Court records.

Alfonso Frank Sanchez of 120 Eclipse Court, Apt. 2, is charged with felony counts of child abuse and child neglect.

Police have said Sanchez knocked over a chair his daughter was in and she struck her head.

On an unrelated visit to a physician two days later, the fracture was discovered and the child was taken to Children's Hospital, where she was treated for several days until being released, police said.

The Child Protective Services division of the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources is providing the child's care, police have said.
