Paul Andrew McCarty, age 77, of Creek Road, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at Autumn Assisted Living in Hagerstown.

Born April 12, 1931, in Hancock, he was the son of the late Earl N. and Margaret E. Starliper McCarty.

He attended Hancock-area schools.

He served in Germany during the Korean War in the U.S. Army.

He retired May 1, 1994, after 26 years with General Motors in Martinsburg, W.Va.

He was a member of United Auto Workers Local 1590.

He was a member of Tonoloway Rod and Gun Club, Hancock.

He was a member of Webster B. Harrison Post 26 American Legion, Hancock, and a member of the AARP.

He was a former member of the Hancock Volunteer Fire Co.


He was a lifelong member of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, where he was a former member of the vestry.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth M. Shoemaker McCarty, whom he married Dec. 31, 1952, at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church; three daughters, Kathy McCarty Santa Barbara and husband, Michael, of Martinsburg, Patricia McCarty Morelock and husband, John, of Topeka, Kan., and Janie McCarty Henry and husband, Greg, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; one sister, Mary Ann Mortzfeldt of Hancock; one brother, Donald L. McCarty Sr. of Hancock; and two granddaughters, Caitlin Santa Barbara and Meghan Santa Barbara, both of Martinsburg.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Harold McCarty Sr., Otho McCarty, George McCarty, Charles McCarty and Roger McCarty.

A service will be held Saturday, Jan. 31, at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, 2 E. High St., Hancock, Md. The Rev. F. Allan Weatherholt Jr. will officiate. Burial with a military service by the Tri-State Honor Guard will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Grove Funeral Home, Hancock, Friday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21740.
